When in Rome

A 1 hour flight to Melbourne. 6 hour wait.

A 7 1/2 hour flight to Kuala Lumpur. 3 hour wait.

A 12 1/2 hour flight to Rome.

30 hours living in airports and planes! We only had about 6 hours of interrupted uncomfortable sleep. 

But we made it here! At 5.30am!

After an hour of looking for transport to get from airport to hostel. We finally found a shuttle bus that would take us to our doorstep.

Unfortunately, that wasn't our doorstep! A little accent barrier... We said Cristina, they heard Sistina.

So we got dropped off, at about 7.15am with our heavy bags, in the wrong place, and no idea where we were or where we had to be!

So we walked. And walked through Rome.

Bought a map from a street vender, and found the subway. Caught the subway, which we barely fitted on with our huge bags (the trains are packed tight!!) and got off at the major train terminal.

Then, with some loose directions given to us by hostel, we eventually found our way home form the train terminal.

On the up side, we got a nice first hand experience of Rome, a side we might never had seen.

NOTE: There are NO traffic rules! They just drive and park and merge and turn and speed anywhere and everywhere! We don't get it... they seem to though...

After some lunch and a rest, we went  straight to the Colosseum! Its is Awesome! Joined a tour group that took us through the Colosseum and then around the Palatino, where the first kings of Rome lived, and the surrounding ruins of the very first Roman city, 700BC! 

Below is the Basilica, the 'town hall' / Church thing back in ancient Rome. Its big.

And then we had some Italian Pizza for dinner. Which was harder to find then you might think, because shops close at 4.30pm. Thats when the sun sets.

Finally we went home to bed at 6.

Excellent first day.
